Eclat x Penfolds experience
"Penfolds is not just a winery; it’s a living history of Australian winemaking" – Max Allen, Wine Writer and Author.
Penfolds Winery, one of Australia’s most renowned and historic wine producers, traces its roots back to 1844. Founded by Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary, the winery began as a small operation at the Magill Estate in Adelaide, South Australia. The Penfolds had emigrated from England in search of a better life and brought with them vine cuttings from France, eager to explore the potential of winemaking in their new homeland.
Dr. Penfold, a physician by trade, initially planted the vines with the intention of producing fortified wines as a tonic for his patients. However, it was Mary Penfold who played a crucial role in the early success of the winery. She took over the management of the vineyards and winemaking after Dr. Penfold’s medical commitments increased, demonstrating remarkable skill and determination. Under her guidance, Penfolds steadily grew, producing a range of wines that gained popularity for their quality.

"All winemakers should possess a good fertile imagination if they are to be successful in their craft" - Max Schubert, Penfolds First Chief Winemaker
By the late 19th century, Penfolds had established itself as a significant player in the Australian wine industry. The winery expanded its operations, acquiring vineyards in other regions and increasing its production capacity. The early 20th century saw Penfolds adapt to changing consumer preferences, shifting focus from fortified wines to table wines, which were becoming increasingly popular.
The post-World War II era marked a pivotal point for Penfolds with the appointment of Max Schubert as Chief Winemaker in 1948. Schubert’s innovative vision and experimentation led to the creation of Penfolds Grange, now considered one of the world’s greatest wines. Initially met with skepticism, the first vintage of Grange in 1951 was a radical departure from traditional Australian winemaking practices. Schubert’s perseverance paid off as Grange garnered international acclaim, solidifying Penfolds’ reputation as a producer of exceptional, age-worthy wines.
Throughout the latter half of the 20th century and into the 21st century, Penfolds continued to expand and innovate. The winery introduced a range of wines that celebrated the diverse terroirs of Australia, including the Bin series and the iconic St. Henri. Penfolds’ commitment to quality and excellence remained unwavering, earning it numerous accolades and a loyal global following.
Penfolds has embraced a global perspective, sourcing grapes from renowned wine regions around the world while maintaining its Australian heritage. This approach has led to the creation of new, exciting wines that continue to push the boundaries of winemaking. Today, Penfolds stands as a testament to the vision, passion, and dedication of its founders and the generations of winemakers who followed.
