The Art of Looking Deeper
There's a familiar frustration in modern healthcare: you know something isn't right, but you're told your tests are "normal". You're exhausted, your digestion is off, your brain feels foggy, or you simply don't feel like yourself, yet there's no obvious answer.
It's this gap between how someone feels and what conventional testing can reveal that sits at the heart of Val Gysberts' work.

A Functional and Nutritional Medicine Practitioner with more than 15 years of experience, Val runs her own practice from Melbourne, working with clients across Australia and internationally. Her approach is deliberately investigative. Rather than simply looking at an isolated symptom, she takes the time to understand the bigger picture: medical history, lifestyle, diet, medications, previous investigations, stress, symptoms and the connections between them.
For Val, the question isn't simply what symptom are we treating? It's why is this happening in the first place?
That philosophy has shaped a practice with a particular focus on root-cause medicine, with areas of interest including neuroinflammation, thyroid health, digestion, chronic fatigue and neurological conditions. Her work combines conventional medical principles with functional medicine, nutritional assessment, lifestyle changes and, where appropriate, more comprehensive testing.
It's a thorough approach, and one that reflects Val's belief that health rarely exists in neat categories.
"Health is my passion," she says, and that curiosity is central to the way she works. Her consultations are designed to give her the time and space to properly listen, rather than rushing through a checklist of symptoms. Before appointments, she reviews patient information and previous blood tests or investigations, then uses the consultation to build a much more complete picture of what might be happening.
Her practice has also evolved well beyond the traditional one-size-fits-all consultation. Val offers general functional medicine appointments, ongoing consultations and specialised neurological assessments, as well as online appointments for clients who can't make it into the clinic. She also works with children and delivers corporate talks focused on nutrition and wellbeing during periods of stress.
There's something particularly relevant about that approach in a culture increasingly obsessed with energy, productivity and performance. Feeling tired has become so normalised that people often learn to work around it rather than question why it is happening. Val's work challenges that idea.
The goal isn't perfection. It's understanding.
Originally from Ireland, Val moved to Melbourne in 2011 and has since built a practice that now supports people well beyond her local clinic in Albert Park. Alongside her professional work, she is also a mum of three – a perspective that gives her an appreciation for the realities of trying to look after your health while navigating an already busy life.
Ultimately, Val's business is built around a simple premise: your symptoms are telling you something.
The challenge is learning how to listen.
Val draws you in with her passion and knowledge, sharing case studies and working through the issues and how her brilliant mind worked to get the root cause of the patients issues.
Whilst never claiming to be able to cure everything – not by lack of effort but the continued support and management of a lifestyle and process. With the mind open and willingness to be progressive and never stop expanding her knowledge – leaving you in an extremely fortunate position to have come across Val Gysberts.
